Organizing With Glass Jars

Since moving to a new home at the end of October I've been slowly setting up and organizing my craft space in the basement. I call it the dungeon but really it's not that bad - just really cold! It's an unfinished basement so there are many creative possibilities :)

Glass jars are definitely my favorite for organizing my tools and findings. I've been looking for ways to make them stand out. A few ideas I'm thinking about:
Yarn/ribbon dispenser
The painted jars are at the top of my list. A quick and easy project for Sunday. I'll need to get a bigger bottle of Mod Podge for the big jars left by the last owners. How do you organize your craft space?

Knit Woven Mug Rug Pattern

I love mugs just as much as I love tea. Any mention of either makes me extremely happy! Sometimes I'll have cookies with my tea and the cork coasters I bought from Etsy aren't big enough for both. I decided it's time to make something bright and big enough to set my tea and cookies on. I threw a pattern together and knit my first mug rug.
I really like the woven look:
Pattern
Yarn: Sugar 'n Cream
Needle: US 7

CO 40 sts (or however many you'd like in multiples of 4) with the invisible cast on
The size of my rug is about 5" x 5-1/2".

Begin woven cable stitch:
Row 1 (right side): *C4F; rep from * to end.
-C4F: Slip two stitches onto cable needle (I used a DPN) and hold to the front. Knit two sts off the left needle and then knit the two sts off cable needle.

Row 2: Purl

Row 3: K2, *C4B; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2
-C4B: Slip two stitches onto cable needle and hold to the back. Knit two sts off the left needle and then knit the two sts off cable needle.

Row 4: Purl
Repeat rows 1-4 as many times you like.

For the edging I decided on the picot point bind off:

Multiple of 3 sts + 2 sts

Bind off 2 sts, *slip rem st from right needle to left needle, cast on 2sts, bind off 4 sts; rep from * to end and fasten off rem st.

I couldn't decide which edging I wanted to do when I casted on so there are a couple extra stitches at the end. I just casted on some and did another repeat.

In order for my cast on to look like my bind off, I undid the cast on, picked up the 40 stitches and did the same bind off method.

I quite like my little rug :) I'll most likely make a bigger one soon. Have you ever made a mug rug?

Etsy Shop Preview

Horrah! My new Etsy shop is scheduled to open this month. I'm really excited about this one. The items I've made I'm quite pleased with and actually want to wear. I've had shops in the past I didn't have much luck with -- well, I didn't have many items listed and didn't promote very well. It's time to revamp! The toughest part is figuring out what will sell. We all go through this, right? Best give it a go and find out. If all fails, I won't have any loss because I love to create anyway!

Here's a preview of star earrings made from polymer clay. What do you think? I painted them marshmallow and sealed them with a couple protective gloss coatings. I couldn't help but make a pair for myself. They are so cheerful! I find when I make something I really like it gives me even more inspiration and motivation to be creative. Hopefully that will last for a long time.

It's a lot easier to make things now that I have a nice size craft area in the basement. The only bothersome thing is it is so cold! Lots of hot tea drinking for me :)

Where do you do most of your crafting? How do you keep your space tidy?

My Valentine Craft Swap

In a past post I briefly mentioned the Oh Strumpets Valentine's Day Craft Swap I signed up for. This was my first ever craft swap and I'm so glad I took part. I was paired up with Pam ~ Making Islands ~ who amazingly embroidered this Sherlock Holmes piece for me. I absolutely love it! Not only because it's Sherlock, but because it's handmade. Pure talent! I can just hear Sherlock and Watson examining the heart left on the chair :)
"Watson: Holmes, let me ask you a question. I hope I'm not being presumptuous, but... there 'have' been women in your life, haven't there?
Holmes: The answer is yes...
Watson: [Watson breathes a sigh of relief]
Holmes: ...You're being presumptuous. Good night"

Friday Find ~ Woven Fabric Necklaces

It has been way too cold here! The groundhog predicted six more weeks of Winter. To warm things up a bit I decided to do some early Spring shopping. These shabby chic woven fabric necklaces by LittleLivingstone on Etsy caught my eye:
Ah...just looking at these makes this dreary, snowy day a lot brighter. I can't decide on which one I love more! What about you? Are you ready for Spring?

My Dear Holmes

Oh boy, I've been high on knitting lately. Between Nerd Wars on Ravelry, my sister-in-law's hat and craft swap projects, I've been neglecting things like this blog and the two frames I bought from the Salvation Army. They have been empty for far too long!
...So here's what I did with one:
Now, where is a good spot to put it?

Friday Finds ~ Hearts

Today is National Wear Red Day to support the fight against heart disease in women. On their website there is a donation link. I donate whenever can to organizations. I consider myself a donation junkie :)
Here are some of my favorite hearts:

Origami Heart Message Card Tutorial by origami-club.com. I love that they have both a diagram and an animation tutorial. I find with this tutorial it's easier to follow along with the animation.

Bloomize has a cute origami heart bookmark tutorial. They are perfect to leave in a book you are donating or swapping or to leave in some books at the Library.

Check out this heart shaped Companion Cube necklace by  Monsterkookies! ~ love! love! love! This is what I am treating myself to for Valentine's Day.

She has lots of other lovely items that I have my eye on for later purchases. Such as, Little Mechanical Birdie Pendant/Necklace

Do you buy yourself gifts for Valentine's Day?
TheLittleFox is one of my favorite Etsy artist. I would buy everything in her shop if I could! She has pendants, prints, paper goods, tote bags and original art. I own this owl with girl necklace and absolutely love wearing it.
